My minions are currently level 2 and I have the 20,000 dark elixir that it takes to upgrade them. Both of my heroes are at the point when it takes 25,000+ to upgrade them. So do minions get better when you upgrade, or is it a waste of dark elixir that I should save for my heroes?
Well, they will change skin at lvl3... I bet you somewhere in the game you are going to upgrade them anyway. Do it

Minions lvl 5 are very strong and effective. Great dps, hp, and cost. I usually carry 10 and use them to kill the BK or to take out buildings like mortars as soon as the air defense is destroyed.

I have my minions at level 2 also. Upgrading to lvl 3 wouldn't be as important to me as upgrading other dark elixir troops unless you use them frequently

I would. I mean if you want to max out a TH completely you'll need to upgrade them. Mine as well do it now.
I say yes upgrade them. Level 5 minions are the thing they have so much DPS and HP. And btw you're going to upgrade them sooner or later in the game might as well do it now.
I have them upgrading to level 4 atm they're amazing upgrade them asap
Upgrade your minions when you can, I have level 3 and love them. Hogs and Valks, no, Minions and Golems, yes.
