How are people still having issues with this?! especially when there's so many saying the cheap quick 'session' armies are no longer an effective way to make loot...

Of course it's to drain you of loot. This whole update was designed to sell more gems. Remove dead bases to stop farming, take out th sniping so you can't hide your loot behind easier shields, and a PBT so you can't try to push for that expensive research/upgrade without being kicked off so someone can take a nice chunk of your resources. They want you to "play the way they intend you to" which basically means they want you to gem for those costly upgrades.
