In lower leagues the defender will actually gain more trophies than the attacker loses so the attacker could lose the battle and lose only 10 trophies but the defender can gain 15 trophies.

Thanks for the info. I think there are any number of ways to overcome a "trophy shortage". I went from 3150 to 3450 overnight, and I can't drop back down without blowing away the day's shield.

No, you start from zero. In the old days they started you at 40 though.
