This isn't everyone's experience. For me, and for my clan, th9 has become an easy auto-wipe against nearly all of our opponents. Maybe once every eight wars or so we actually match up to a skilled opponents with anti three star layouts but even then after the traps are revealed its not too hard to wipe them.

Even worse is is that a majority of the match ups are against unskilled th9 clans that still gowipe for whatever reason. They usually have bases that are easily defeated with goho/govalo/golalo. We are finding that th9 has been reduced to hit early or hit a wiped base for 'fun'.

where oh where are the arranged war and/or war tournament features. These would save this game, or at least prolong its death for many.

Simple. Because then at best its a two star war. That's all you'll be able to do if you don't go to the fluffy side. It's not about the challenge, or lack thereof. TH10 is a 2 star war. TH9 was a very good balance. You could defend well, and triple well if you really applied yourself. You cannot say that about TH9 now. You never could say that about TH10. There are two choices- stay at TH9 where wars will end in a few stars from perfect...or move to TH10 where its a 2 star fest. Oh, and if you do move to TH10- then you have the problem of trying to generate enough progression to upgrade those 6, 8 million dollar upgrades. Which while on the topic of TH complaining- I seem to hear an awful lot of new TH10s complaining about.

although I must admit the update changes have saved some of my war attacks, all in all I'm not the biggest fan of the updates. I get a lesser sense of satisfaction when I 3-star a base now, as it has become much easier.

Not exactly, I've played several wars where we knew a % we needed to get to win the tie breaker and it was JUST AS FUN hoping to reach that %.

You're looking at a # rather than a star icon.

a three star maximum only has four outcomes. The % destruction broadens what you can strive for. "I am a TH10 and I average about a two star 60% destruction".

I've seen some pretty cool strats from TH10, including one of my guys using lightening to take out two wizard towers.
I would argue as a whole it is still less exciting. Getting 3 stars people can say I succeeded, the clan can get excited. If you have 40 People all playing for percentage what is a successful attack? 80%? 85%? What if the base is not fully maxed. You don't have a solid feeling of "that was good". Might be different in the last hour or two when percentage for a couple of attacks will decide the war.

Honestly IMO the biggest challenge is pushing vs farming. Pushers want a chance to defend or why bother spending thousands on max defenses. While th9 was balanced for war I could take my mid level heroes and gibarch just about any th9 for 2 stars.

Th10 was balanced for pushing in that if the attacker wasn't great there was a reasonable chance of defending. This pushing balance meant that the balance for 3 stars wasn't there.

First off Th9 was widely considered the most balanced Th level. And I would agree. It was also considered THE home for non ♥♥♥♥♥ing war enthusiasts. I must also admit to seeing way more 3 stars post update but this also happens to be at the same time my clan is really upping their game.

Its why I left Th8. Figured 3 star was just too easy. 30 extra seconds and a free spell slot. No real challenge.

But Th10 is a poor poor replacement.

    But lets look at why.

What are the biggest 3 star comps for Th9?

Lets simply and state that Loons and Hogs are a huge part of the overall 3 star strategies present at Th9. Why? Because you can predict and plan with them. Sure other troops are used and are very important for the overall strategy, but Loons and hogs give you that surgical factor. They allow you to turn a blunt for GoWiPe into a 3 star strategy (or allot of Valkyrie tactics )

Th10 gets the following troop upgrades

    Tanks: Golems, LH, and Giants

Big but Slow Troops - PEKKA, Dragons

Farming Troops - Barch and Minions

That is it. The true cornerstones of a war army are capped at Th9 and yet Th10 gains the strongest defensive tower in the game and a huge number of point defense upgrades.

The end result isn't only that 2 stars are the norm but that their is a distinct lack of diversity. Most Th10 attacks are penta-golem-ish things. Occasionally someone pulls out a GoVaLo but that is a seriously difficult to master strategy and isn't going to work against any old base... which means veteran Th10 players aren't going to leave their Th10 open to common 3 star methods (such as AQ walk/charge)

Which again would be fine and dandy if we still could and needed to use a variety of attacking strategies. As it stands, your better off just spamming golems with wizards behind - the correct number of jumps and you'll get a decent percentage and 2 stars.

    Its dull

Honestly after I got my warden to level 5, I'd say forget Th10. Max Th9, master taking down Th10 bases as you get the basics from Th10 (troop upgrades, camp, etc) and then head straight to Th11.

At least you get the warden's health boost and invisibility ability. Its freakin' sweet.

Also the infernos basically negate heal spells which provide further nerfs to hog attacks, valk attacks which requires using high numbers of large tanks which don't need heal spells.

And what's wrong with everyone getting two starred? It will still come down to the % of destruction to see who wins. Before you would have a tie if everyone is three starred, now you can actually see who is better by who can wipe out the most of the other person's base.
