Here is what I think supercell is doing and I honestly would do the same:
wait for everything to settle down and keep calculating some key stats:
what is the percentage of users who experienced worse, same or better rate of loot compared to pre-update.
THe rate of loot would be considered: how much pure profit accumulated by one individual per week.
Of course, this is very complex calculations that might require cubes in business intelligence.
But if the percentage say of users who experienced the same or better rate loot compared to pre update is at least over 55% to 70%, It can be said that the update has at least benefited most of players.
if the percentage is lower, they can adjust league bonuses and other things until they get to this point.
the point is that the determination of whether players are getting good loot or bad loot is based on stats not based on forum complaints.
They even have stats regarding about gem consumption and the percentage of users who benefited from this update who actually buys gems. As Jonas said, they have tons of stats.
And honestly, I would personally base any decision on solid stats that support any change.
