What is more efficient, dropping lightning spells one at a time, or dropping them all at once? This thing has been bothering me for a while.

How about you drop them away from the buildings. It does extra damage there.
Damage wise, its the same. But I think dropping them a few seconds apart might be smarter. Say you have 4 lightning spells. If you want to take out a mortar, you drop them all on it. And it is destroyed. The reason it's smarter to spread them out is because you may end up over killing it. If you spread them out, you may end up surprising yourself, and saving a spell.
I would drop the absolute minimum at the same time--usually 2--and drop more until the turret is destroyed, using minimal time and not overusing the spells.

I have had times when I would send all spells at once on an air defense and the spells would not kill it because some of the strikes would not hit it directly (and yes I would calculate that the combined damage of the lightning would be greater than the damage the AD could take) so I am asking if using 1 at a time would have a greater chance of each lightning strike hitting the AD directly and not somewhere way off. Hope that makes sense.
Like all things in this game, it depends.
1. What level is your spell vs the level of the targets.
2. Do you want to hit the target, weaken the target, or destroy the target.
3. Do you expect to enter the target's compartment.
4. What is next to the target.
5. Could there be cc troops.
6. Are you going to keep playing after this fight or log off for 90 minutes.
For me:
1. I drop all three at the same spot right after each other if I'm only going for the DE and nothing else.
2. I drop them in different spots on the same target if I want to weaken what's around it, or even destroy what's next to it.
3. I don't drop at all if I expect this is not my last fight of the day.
4. I save one for the end of the fight if it's a total disaster, as one well placed spell can collect like 80k of resources.
So, it depends what "efficient" means to you.
