They could have easily tapered off TH sniping by releasing the features sequentially in 3 updates over 2-3 months.

Update 1: League bonus changes (bonus depends on % damage)
This will bring down the rate of TH sniping as farmers won't snipe anymore. Low TH pushers would still snipe, and people would still keep their TH outside and hope for a pusher to find them.

Update 2: TH holds a portion of your loot
This would make people think twice before keeping their TH out, and players will have to assess the risk vs benefit. This will bring down the number of outside THs.

Update 3: Shield changes
After this update, all the players will move their TH back inside, as it will become pointless to have it outside.

It is however too late to do all that, and the only thing SC can do right now to keep players from rage quitting is to supply them with dead bases, which is under their control. This can very well be tapered off in 5-6 months, giving players the time they need to adapt. Farmers feel way too offended right now, its all about manipulating the mind.
