Hello everybody!
This thread focuses on a very important aspect of the game: Clan Wars. Improving things like Clan War matchmaking is a complex and delicate job, so this thread will offer an in-depth explanation of what will combine two of the most wanted War features, a "Neutral" option and improved matchmaking, into what I think will greatly improve the enjoy-ability of the game for everybody.
A Revamped and Improved Clan War system
In this thread, I will be going over a lot of in-depth explanation of this deceptively simple feature. But, for those of you who don't want to read a long and detailed thread, there are two headline items that you need to be aware of to get the gist:
- New war preference "Backup" will put you in war if necessary, for the war algorithm to potentially find fairer matchups
- No more than 1/5 of the POSSIBLE Clan War population that are set to "Backup" can be put in war
How the new 'Backup' feature improves war matchmaking
This new "Backup" option may not seem like a major change, but it will offer many solutions to make clan wars much more competitive, fair, and enjoyable for everybody. But how will it help? Well, here's how the Backup feature works:
- Currently you can only start war if you have a multiple of 5 people (10+) that are opted into Clan Wars. Those set on the "Backup" option will count towards the number of people opted IN...if the combined total between them and those opted in are more than 10 people.
- When more people are on the "Backup" preference, the war algorithm can hypothetically factor in each player individually against another clan(s) to see which combination and against which clan will make wars the most fair. And this is a win-win for everybody.
- Wars will have a new button where the leader/Co-leader will choose how big the war will be (10, 15, 20, etc., you will only be shown the possible numbers of a clan war that your clan members can make) BEFORE the participants are chosen. This will come in to play with the next and final point...
Now hypothetically, all people in a clan who want to war could be set as Backup, right? It would offer the fairest war matchmaking, so why not? Well, this could be easily exploited - when the Backup feature is added, it should not be the automatic choice instead of opting in. People should still have to strategize about who they want to participate in war, and should not simply decide that they will let the game decide their best matchup. That's why we have one more point to go over in our first headline:
- Those with the "Backup" preference cannot take up more than 1/5 of the Clan War size. This means that in a 25 vs. 25 war, only 5 of those people could have been set to "Backup." Note that this does NOT limit the amount of people in your clan that can be set to "Backup," this just means that of those chosen, only 1/5 of them could have been set to "Backup."
Confused? Here is a war scenario that will help you understand things better:
- Say in a clan, 20 people are set to "I'm in" and 10 people are set to "Backup."
- When the Leader starts the war, he will be told to chose the size. (The only possible amounts in this case are 10, 15, 20, and 25, because 1/5 of the size is 5 people that can be "Backup.")
- If the leader chooses 25 v. 25, the algorithm will filter between the 10 Backups against different clans, until it finally narrows it down to 5 Backups that make the best match, and the war is started.
This change will ultimately make a step in the right direction for Clan War matchmaking. Please leave your thoughts, comments, and feedback below, and I will be sure to answer any questions or adjust any information accordingly.![]()
