Why not use giants at TH8 for a tank on outside wiz towers? The hp may be the same as hogs but having a wiz tower firing at the giant and not a whole group of hogs puts all the damage on 1 expendable troop rather than a pack of hogs all eating up the same amount of damage. That will let you heal deeper into a base with outside wiz towers or a base where the wiz tower radius reaches the wall the giant is sitting on.

Using a hog there doesn't cost much HP, and is far more useful when the WT goes down while doing damage to the WT.

I appreciate the thoughts and different opinions on this subject. I can see we all have different thoughts on the same attack. Simple math on damage taken vs damage done of course all depends on how the defenses are set in the base and their range to other defenses. Bottom line is hogs done in mass or surgical, with or without giants, are now and have been a killer at TH8.

Yea mass hog and surgical are no doubt th 8's best troop in war, but it doesnt need giants as tanks, as giants and hogs have almost the same HP, plus hogs are fast at destroying defenses, your giants will be pounding the wall almost the whole raid as your hogs are way deep in the base, so that is 5 camp space wasted...Th 8 hogs don't need a tanking unit other than the king or a golem, which becomes a whole different strategy called goho..
So just use full hog army.
Also i don't recommend one finger or even two finger hog deployment..Either Asian wall deployment or if you are very good use surgical. It's good to have the king as an inicial tanking unit when deploying hogs
