Why is it that whenever I need something I check in the farmstands and I can't find what I need but when I don't need it everyone is selling it....besides "Murphy's law". What gives?!?!

Supercell uses an algorithm to determine what you don't have, and then purposefully does not display the ads for those items. If you can find even one of, say, cotton, the next Daily Dirt will probably have cotton ads. Unless the DD is overrun by whatever is out of w.h.a.c.k drop-wise...right now that is brick and paint. Tomorrow it might be planks!!![]()

I'm one of the ones that feels like there must be something to it (the algorithm as you say snakiddy). Even if I need something like wheat, I will not find it in the paper until I send that boat away!

Supply and demand applies only to free markets. Supercell controls the supply by carefully limiting items in the Daily Dirt. Supercell controls demand with trucks, boats, townies, etc. Supply and demand in Hayday is simply hogwash.
I've read of some legendary shoppers who scour the DD and find awesome stuff regularly. But that would not be me. As a DD-shopper, I'm a flop. I mean... I look.... I try. But even though I check almost every ad, there's rarely a payoff, so I don't spend a lot of time with the newspaper.
Since I don't like banging my head against the wall of maps, bricks, wheat, or whatever product has overrun the paper this month, I shaped my game so that my farm/town are mostly self-sufficient. It does take some diamonds to strategically open up extra production slots on some machines. It takes attention to tracking inventory and planning production accordingly. But it's nice not having to rely on the DD. And eventually, when you find that you make more than you need, you might even sell the extra. And all of a sudden, you don't need to find those special sellers in the DD, because you - yourself - have become the seller that you've been looking for.![]()

The only time I look at the DD is if I'm doing boats or I want something that I know will probably be there. Since I rarely do boats I don't look too often. I like to be self sufficient too, I'd hate to be reliant on others for what I need. I do visit my GCFriends a couple of times a day to see what's on sale.
