My mini is a mostly defenseless th9, i bought traps and teslas but still weigh about as much as a decent th6/ rushed th7. I maxed most troops at th7 but skipped th8 to th9 for a better chance at 3 starring max 8s.
Up to th7, it's pretty easy to keep going. I got the majority of the loot from a handful of 100-200k raids and war loot so it's pretty low maintenance. It does start to get a bit more difficult to hold loot once you hit th8 but just 1 boost raid will get you mostly what you need to keep the lab busy. Since you don't really need to hoard gems for builders, no defenses duh, you can boost raid every few days or so without spending anything. Plus, you typically get 16 hour shields so maxed collectors recover any lost loot so boosting may not even be necessary some times.
At th9, you just raid more than you lose cause you're gonna lose a lot. At that point, things get slow and tedious as freemium games do, so you may want to consider just staying at 9 or only going to 10 for the extra spell troop capacity.
Overall, I suggest maxing collectors asap. Using strong cc troops for raiding to hasten progress at minimal cost to you; maxed loons or hogs waste th5s and down so easy. Only upgrade troops you plan to use first; you can ignore gobs, healers, giants etc. And have fun being able to hit way above your mirror.
