What about the gold mines? Are the gold from the whale too?
I'm glad you picked up on the referencei'd never say it's a magical place. It's not Tahiti.
Gold mines were invented to mine for gold. However the the villagers never have realized that the product being mined from their mines is in fact not gold. It is star whale bone marrow. In order for the whale to cleverly fool it's inhabits it changes it's color of it's marrow into a gold color by using a whale form of photosynthesis. The bone marrow hardens into a golden coin fooling all that it is actual gold. This is all done in an attempt to keep the villagers in the dark. Don't worry the star whale has a healing aspect, so it is able to regenerate bone marrow rather quickly, which allows a near unlimited supply of marrow coins.
Like someone said earlier, all star whales have to use the little whale's room once in a while. The whales poop is funneled through a high tech purification system which removes all of the arsenic from the feces and turns it into a highly prestigious currency that is often consumed by kings and queens of the world. The whale poop possesses a magic substance that allows the feces to generate new life. The right concentration of feces a long with the right environment can create a variety of gruesome creatures. Let's just say that we all know what minions are really throwing now.
