I've played on my iPhone and my friends Samsung whatever... iPhone is the best. Speaking the truth

Better pick a note3/note4 new or used as the battery stays longer and it charges faster. Also the screen is bigger yet can fit inyour pocket(unless very small one). Been using the note series even before I played clash without any problems. The device you picked wasn't the best, that is why it ended up overheating and force closing clash. Good luck with your next choice

your best chance to get players and clans you want!
Longest I play CoC on iphone device is about 30 minutes. Other games I played for 2.5 hours continuously until battery drain out. No issue whether on battery or plug-in charger. The device is warm only. Using Wifi though.
iPad longest is about 12-13 hours continuously with the screen switched on. Playing CoC. Login again after the 6 hours kick. Wifi only.
I'm using original charger and cable, hence totally no issue. Not other USB charger which may have funny behaviour, as I use a 3rd party charger for another android phone, the touch screen goes crazy.

There is no device that doesn't overheat with clash of clans. Better look for a phone with good battery life
Iphone versions ranging from 4s - 5s should be good enough to play CoC without issues.
I have a 4s here and it pretty much runs smoothly without heating too much.
I play on both iPhone 4 and Experia E3, both get hot while plugged in but haven't overheated yet.
I've played on an iPad 2 too and find the bigger screen a way more forgiving interface for it and they're not too pricey these days
My 2 year old iPad air runs clash better than my friends new iPhone 6.
