It's also a much cheaper army than the rest of them and if you don't need the poison then a haste can actually be useful here. Loonioning 8s almost feels like I'm back spamming mass dragons at TH7, but I also realize I haven't put nearly as much practice with it so maybe I haven't had time to seen it fail?
It's possible to fail, but you need to work at it. I used to do this before hounds existed: plenty of loons, 2 rage, 2 heal, a few minions (or other troops to fight CC - minions are rarely best option). Even without a hound it's a 100% success rate if done correctly.

With hounds then only possible way to fail the raid is to spread the loons along one side of the base when one gun is further out, so that the entire lot end up in one bunch. Then depending on the pathing it's possible to fail. Which is pretty good training for a TH9 on how not to deploy loons.

The downside is that if an attacker is doing this all the time some of the other ideas they will get in their head (using heal spells for example) are going to be unhelpful later

If it's war and it's all about stars over style then DragLoon is about as certain as it gets. 10 drags, 10 Loons(Inc. CC), 3 lightening, 1 rage.

TH8's with an air def zapped cannot defend against that.

There should be no doubt on a TH9's ability to 3 star a TH8. You'd have to massively screw up a raid to not get a 3 star against a TH8 with maxed TH9 troops...

I use 8 drag + 18 loons (6 from CC), 4 rage spells. You can ignore any defensive CC troops and finish their bases in ~2 mins.

Using DE troops on th8 is totally a waste.

This, you've got lv 6 loons & I hope cc upgraded so its usable right now (i'd use more rages & more loons but either should work). Still can't ignore the basics - lure & deal with cc, mind the blowers - but takes a big screwup to come up short of 3*.

As an early TH9, I've used LavaLoonion.

    CC - Hound
    Spells - 3 rage/1 poison (4th rage is overkill)
    Army - 2 Hound, 22 Loon, 4 Wiz, 3 Archer, 7 Barb, 12 Minion
    Heros Optional

    • Use 1-2 loons to lure (or sub in giants/hogs depending, but valks are a pain if lured with ground)
    • use archer anchors to pull cc. if a witch is in CC, use a minion as skeletons will stay behind then.drop poison
    • start a barb stream (drop 2-3 from edge on a timing pattern), deploy wizards around dragon, continue barb stream. Since you're luring with air, valks/giants/etc will stay inside.
    • Send in CC hound.
    • Draw two lines with loons on two adjacent base sides.
    • Send in two regular hounds to other two AD (or occasionally 1 to same as CC hound). Rage over base.
    • Win

You can vary the army to have 4 hounds and no minions if the ADs are cored as you will get more pups, but if hounds don't pop, you will risk losing.

There's a bit of planning with which side to attack from, but that's it. I have never failed. Once I needed an AQ6 to cleanup a dragon and once I needed BK/AQ to cleanup after (used 4 hounds, despite overlapping fire, none! popped, wouldn't have gotten all trash)

Surprised people are still standing by dragons over death loons. Dragons get stuck on those high hp storages covering all the ads while four death loons is like double the dps, more hp, heal spells are 4x as effective, sams are FAR less effective on 30+ loons especially if the hound tanks them..when I've deployed my dragons well it came down to the last dragon, when I noobspammed my loons from upwind of the ads and healed appropriately I clear the defenses in less than a minute and generally don't even need to drop the minions. Death loons are ridiculously more effective, you guys saying dragons should try the death loons. It feels like dragoning a th7.

Gowipes are also expensive and have a much higher chance of failure

AT TH9, lavaloon attack on a TH8 is impossible to stop...if you aren't awful. Pull/kill the CC with heroes, 2 hounds then a couple loons on each defense, all rage spells, 10 or so minions for cleanup. WAY WAY overkill on ANY TH8. It is an attack you MUST master, a TH9 can't afford to 2 star a Th8 on a war cleanup, there is zero excuse for that. Screw dragons, they are not a sure thing, lavaloon is.

Saying that, I still see people unable to execute this attack as a TH9 and it's sooooo easy, seems almost impossible not to 3 star with it, but I've seen people find a way. Not fully pulling the cc is a big one. If you can't 3 star a TH8 with level 6 loons and any level hounds, join a non war clan, war isn't for you.

You definitely have a number of options but I am still kind of a new to mid th9. I only have max hogs, lvl 6 giants, lvl 6 archers. Loons are going now. When I have to drop to hit max 8s it's really base dependent. Hogs on compact bases (4heal make it unfair). Or Gowixx for those spread out bases. Having max loons and hounds I would agree with most that lavaloonion is the easiest safest bet to defeating max 8s. If you don't want to use much DE then dragloon with 8-9 drags and the rest loons is good too because you can bring extra in your cc and extra spell space. I have mainly seen 8s with spread bases and like 1 layer of walls so Gowiwi is very effective on those. Hope it helps

Honestly you could 3 star any TH8 with lvl 6 giants, wizzies and some heals.

But that is super cheap and if you fail I think your clan would get mad at you.
