So, offensively I'm still very much a new 9 (four spells, 220 spaces, level 5 AQ and death loons everything else max TH8), and I'm wondering how other 9s ensure three stars vs TH8s in wars, and here are my thoughts on a few strategies:
Ladragloon. Thought it would be OP to deck an ad, and have a cover the other two whIle raging the dragons and loons.. but with the amount dragons struggle at TH8 for a very expensive elixir army the two attempts I've done with it have *barely* cleared a max 8 which leaves me uncomfortable, especially since even if you path your dragons well they're still slow and once you drop them you're stuck praying.
Hogs. I loved hogs at TH8 for max 8s, but now DE is far more precious and a double giant bomb can ruin your day, so it's not nearly foolproof enough for attacking a base blind. Sure, you can gohog, but there's still a chance to guess wrong, and obviously if a 9 drops down to attack an 8 it absolutely has to be a three star run on the first pass. I've done a few hog runs as a 9 cleaning up 8s and they're generally a joke cleaning up after 8s, but I still want to know the giant bomb locations.
Gowixx. I haven't run one of these as a 9 on an 8, but they're expensive and I've seen the opposition and even my own clan mates fail about 25% of the time on maxed 8s. Obviously with a 9 they finally have the firepower using this to take down a maxed 8, but if the golems and dps separate it might be game over, and once again it's expensive and not nearly foolproof again.
And finally.. loonion?
I had never thought straight loonion was a viable war attack compared to all the fancier sounding strategies, but with 32-34 death loons, a cc hound, and 20-30 minions with 3 Heal one rage it seems that maxed 8s are pretty much unable to really scratch my loons much at all and I can finish the run with 20-25 loons just by spamming them upwind of the sweeper after my ks takes out the CC. It's also a much cheaper army than the rest of them and if you don't need the poison then a haste can actually be useful here. Loonioning 8s almost feels like I'm back spamming mass dragons at TH7, but I also realize I haven't put nearly as much practice with it so maybe I haven't had time to seen it fail?
Anyway, just wondering what everyone else thinks. New 9s can't really be expected to 3 star real 9s, so I think they're properly optimized by going after the upper 9s you know you only need to two star (assuming no 10s in war) so that your top 9s can three star as many lower 9s as possible, or taking out the max 8s you think your hoggers might struggle with to make their job of 3ing every 8 far easier.
