Everytime during war, I always ask my leader what attack strat to use for the different bases and he always tell me how many troops to use and where to place them and I always get three stars sometimes 2. I want to know how does one know what attack strat to use for which base and exactly how many troops to use.

experience... and that's the whole purpose of this game according to me, being able to analyse a base, and decide of an attack strategy depending on walls/def/heroes placement (as well as potential trap placement), and on the other side build a base that will make it difficult for the attacker to build his own strategy ;-)Originally Posted by DeathAngeLegiT
Honestly, you should stop asking it to your leader, you will never learn this way. Try to build your own strategy, and then validate it with your leader. If you don't agree with him, ask him why so you start understanding the concepts.

I'm kinda new to this but have been successful most of the time when dealing with an enemy base based on my own assessment.
If you aren't already go to Youtube and start watching OneHiveRaids Elite 8's video series.
At th8, use drags until you get hogs to 4. Once you get hogs up there that's really all you need. For a maxed 8 that is well laid out, you may need to employ a golem to clear an area of giant bombs. The type of deployment you employ will depend on the base. In almost all cases a single dump of all your hogs is a bad idea (you risk a catastrophic loss of hogs to a double giant bomb set and springs will take out more hogs). A two or three finger drop is usually the way to go, or what they call an "Asian Wall" deployment where you make a line of hogs and move them from one-side to the other attacking in a large wave.
The single largest factor in your success with hogs is how you use your spells. It's not that hard to figure out where the best places to drop your heals are. The real challenge and the hardest to master is the timing. Even pro's like Jake (from OneHive) can miss-time a spell drop slightly that costs them the 3 star.
I'm curious to know what sort of attacks your clan leader is directing you to use. If he is having you use drags that is understandable. They do get results early in TH8 life. Lightning, raged, and even all heals (I know...everyone says heals and drags don't work. They do. I see it almost every week from my clan leaders alt account). But unless your clan leader is a master strategist and tactician that is very good at analyzing bases, I'd dive into Youtube and start watching and learning as much as you can and find out what others are doing. Nothing wrong with getting advice from someone more experienced but we all learn best from our own experience and that will almost certainly include some failures. The learning curve of hogging is steep. I tanked several attacks at the start. Don't give up. A lot of poeple give up on hogs and retreat back to drags or GoWiPe and become 2-star specialists. Don't be one of those.

Funny you should mention the elite 8's series! I literally just discovered it and sent the link to my clan mates in groupme (we are one of those clans that is heading towards the gowipe rut and I'm hoping this will steer us clear of it).
I only just got gowipe troops and I am already very glad that I went for lvl4 hogs as soon as I had lvl3 drags. (They finish upgrading in time for the next war even!)
