Wow! This is a brilliant idea, and is perfect for my situation with a "defenseless" account that just went to TH10, and does not want to hold any more gold.

I use quotes around defenseless because I am a TH10 with two lvl4 ATs, a lvl4 cannon, three lvl3 teslas, four lvl6 ADs and a handful of traps. This weighs me below my clan mates who are traditional TH7s, but I can attack much higher since I have max loons and other high troops with king/queen and a 35 capacity CC.

I don't really want to hold any gold at the moment, so building and canceling might work out once in a while...expensive wars, though!

While you may gain an advantage occasionally if you time your upgrades to your war schedule, it's not something someone can do regularly once you get to TH9/10 where upgrade costs and time for completion starts getting very expensive and long.
Actually it could be done regularly if a clan was well organized and wanted to win badly enough. Players who are TH10 but haven't yet built infernos could start a set of infernos after the war search and then cancel them after war day starts. This would be a total cost of 5M per war. Many people farm that in a day if they boost their barracks (not me, I have too much going on IRL). You would probably need to get at least 5 people doing it as 10 unaccounted for lvl 1 infernos would most likely be enough to swing the majority of wars to auto-win status.

With all that said, I have never seen any clan exploiting this but maybe I just haven't been warring against clans serious enough to spend half of their farming loot on winning wars.

I timed my upgrade from 8 to 9 to happen just after war started. It got me an AQ, some more traps, walls and lvl1 defenses and storages. I spent most of my day trying to reconfigure my TH to a decent base. At the end of the day I gained an advantage yes but it wasn't a big as you would think. The guy still GoWiPed me for his 2 stars and 56% and no part of what I did would have stopped that. Yes it was nice having the AQ for my attacks but their 1 and 2 had easy hoggable bases so Its not like she was the War changer.

Sorry to burst your bubble but its not that big of a deal. Its not like he became a fully functional TH9 overnight with new army camps and troops. Just added some more buildings.

I don't see this trick as a very big deal. It's not like players can do it every war or every few wars or every month or two and at town hall 9 maybe not even for a year. It can't be done very often. And it's not like it's a instant loss for your clan.

If your clan wars more than once each week, this is going to happen sooner or later unless you opt out while upgrading (but why would you?). Like others here have already said, you can only do it once per town hall level.

    No Big Deal

Really No Big Deal ... Sometimes it just happens because you have 45 members in a clan and there is always going to be somebody with a base being upgraded. There would be no way (or Reason) to try and wait until everybody's base would finish before war search.

In the end it is negligible in the big scheme of things. Things like this happen all the time in everyone's favor such as having troops or spells in your camps that are automatically upgraded when research is done even though you paid the lower price for them.

if there is any type of a dirty trick it would be when someone is a new TH10 and the war search is completed then they start their 2 infernos and new xbow building so they are active in the war base for the war, then they cancel them after the war!!! This is expensive and most cant do it ... but some do and again ... just part of the game.

Clash On and have fun out there however you choose to play! :-)

No they don't. No one does this. Just because it can be done doesn't mean ppl do it. The cost alone would be 5 mil per war but more importantly, you have a TH10 w/out its greatest defence in regular game play. You would get raped everytime you logged off.

Well there are much TH9.5s around which is basically this (TH10 minus infernos)

I'm not sure how many of them wanna spend resources to build them in prep day, I think very few

I can assure you some people do it ;-) Just the one tower though, using accumulated gold. In theory it's only in case of mismatch, but it tends to get added anyway once the gold stores are overflowing and the mines are filling up.

Last war our opponent had 6 TH9s who had only just upgraded to TH9 - matched to TH8 on our side. We're pretty sure they hadn't built anything for TH9 yet at the time of the match, but a few hours into prep day 5 of them had xbows and a level 1 AQ (and some other wimpy guns starting to build). It seemed like the whole lot held off building anything until war matched.

this is the least biggest problem in clan wars and you decide to flag it. rarely happens, rarely considered a trick. in the end the way you score stars is what wins the match, not some ones last minute defenses.
