I'm kinda mad now that walls have added war weight. On my main, I went thru the trouble of grinding my zapps before any defense really. I was always the lowest th 10 in any war. Since the new update, tho, I am now about 4-5th. The people below me have max defenses, but lower walls, while I'm the opposite, and get hammered all the time. O whale.

I build so that one of my resources is always very low to avoid being a desirable raid target. At the beginning of a new TH level I upgrade elixir buildings and use all gold for walls(aside from the cc, that comes first). Once all of that is done I switch and will start upgrading defenses and dump all elixir into walls.

Aside from making myself an undesirable target this also keeps the walls coming at a steady pace early on so I won't have as many to complete once everything else is maxed.

If you are going to get weight, may as well be for something substantial.

Based on my recent war experiences I agree completely with this. I don't know if the people that are advocating walls for the serious war people are up to date on the current weighting system but in my experience high level walls will significantly jump you in base weighting and subsequently pull in a tougher opponent base. In addition, many of the higher level war strategies use troops that jump or fly over walls. On top of that, besides our good ole wallys, we have jump spells and now earthquake spells to get through even max walls. If you are serious about war, I would upgrade offense first, camps, troops, lab, spells then defense and use extra resources to do walls. I don't agree with significantly low walls but if you have maxed your previous townhall level then add new walls take them to previous townhall level but focus on offense first then defenses and then upgrade walls with excess.

Walls may look more advanced but in terms of defending your base, the defences will protect it much better.

I would say your #1 goal should be keeping your builders busy. Walls get done with the extra loot you have in between builds. Ideally you can use all 5 builders and just stagger the time each upgrade finishes so you get access to a builder each day for walls (it is pretty easy to do that at TH9 and below), but if you gain loot very fast then even having access to a builder once per day may not be enough and you might consider keeping a builder free for walls. Even then, if keeping a builder free causes you to finish your walls well before your other buildings then you didn't do yourself any favors since you still have to wait around for your buildings to be done (and you would have been done faster if you kept all the builders busy non-stop).

As for walls vs defenses, all that matters is that you keep your builders busy. If you want to focus all your builders on mine and collector upgrades (which cost next to nothing and leave you almost all your loot for walls) then go for it and use your loot on your walls. If you want to spend all your gold on defenses so you have no money left over for walls (or very little) that is a fine option too. In my opinion neither choice is all that much better. Getting your mines and collectors done early is beneficial as it gives you more loot in the long run (and you can work on a ton of walls while they upgrade), but defenses protect the loot you do have better and make you a tougher war target. There is no incorrect choice. Do what feels right.

Walls first if you want to matter in war, defenses first if you are just a farmer. Higher defenses will make you look tougher for war, but not much tougher to beat.

Why do you believe the opposite to everybody else here?

You are aware that the weighting changed at the last major update?
