GoWiPe is pretty damn good st TH8. Only difference is that TH8 has weaker golems and 20 less troop capacity. Anyways I never used hogs as TH8 as I saved all my dark elixir. GoWiPe was enough to 3 star most TH8, even when they were maxed.

This nonsense regarding GoWiPe being just a 2* strategy...well, it's just that. Nonsense.
The frailty of lvl4 hogs is a far greater risk if you ask me.
When all's said and done, each attack has it's place base dependant. Sure, you guys have your favourites but don't laud one exclusively because you plain suck at another.
Gowipe is a good strategy that you can get 3 stars with if you know what to do. I just 3 star'd a TH9 (no xbows) in my clan war this morning with gowipe, and I'm still a TH8.
Lvl 4 hogs are good too depending on the base. It really comes down to what base layout you are attacking.

Hogs with a 2 golly, wiz and king kill squad is pretty unstoppable. If base has lots of open spaces for traps. Making hogs risky, gowipe becomes good again. Anything less than well positioned L6 air defenses will die to dragloon though. Especially with L6 loons in cc.
Yes hogs is definitely more viable, but make sure you have level3 hogs at least. Below that they just die too quickly.
Gowipe at TH8 and early TH9 is a viable (note: I didn't say good) strategy for 3 stars, especially if you have a max pekka CC or level 4 golems (@ TH9). A Gowipe with a max Pekka can easily wreck a TH8, and a Gowipe with Level 4 Golems and CC max Pekka can wreck an 8.5 or an early 9. That's where it ends. Then again, not many research level 3 & 4 Golems right off the bat. So it's usually high 9s hitting low 9s that get the 3 with Gowipe.
Hogs, are more versatile and reliable. Which is why at TH8, HOGS. HOGS HOGS HOGS. Once you learn surgical and goho, trust me, you can wreck every single TH8 without fail. That's how OP it is. But what's more important, is the TH9 transition. Once you start hitting higher bases, Gowipe just doesn't work anymore. Why would you use a strategy over and over again if it doesn't work in the long term?
At mid/late TH9, 3 starring strategies mainly consist of hogs/lalo or hybrid strategies with back end loons/hogs. That is why most people say hogs at TH8. Because it's a skill that 3 stars all the way till end TH9 or even 10. If you're only going to learn hogs at TH9, have fun learning. You're taking a big leap. And you'll experience being kicked pretty often from serious war clans. On the flip side, if you're a casual player, well, whatever floats your boat.
