    Swift and Sure #99GQPQ2Q | TH6+ | Level 5 clan | Adults only | Competitive

Swift and Sure #99GQPQ2Q, is an adult level 5 clan based about half and half between Europe and North America. We are looking to add adult clashers with non-rushed town hall 6+. We invite you to check us out, have a war with us, see if we collectively are a fit.
    Some specifics about us:

    • We have a good mix of town hall levels, with a mix of very skill level.
    • We are at about 30 members right now. We want to get to max out with active clashers.
    • Most of our members opt in every war, though as we are mostly adults with jobs, families and lives, we understand when life gets in the way and people opt out.
    • We do not allow 'squatters' though. You have to war at least once a season, when we have our mandatory 'all-in' clan war.
    • We are active donators, and while we don't have a formal ratio requirement, we don't like to see players with hugely lopsided ratios either.
    • With regards to a constantly improving clan, we use Band.us to organize our wars, chat, socialize, strategize and otherwise be a community and family not merely a clan.
    • We go to war on average 4 times a season, or twice a week. Wars are optional, though we like to have one full clan war each season.
    • We are an affiliate clan of JTJ University of YouTube fame. This grants us access to their proprietary strategies and lots of online, near immediate attack advice.

We hope to see you soon. When you apply, tell them Liz (ChemGeek) sent you. Hope to see you soon!
    Liz

    Wow this needs updating...

Will start a new thread as we have changed the way we war, entirely. Since we war 15v15, we aren't too concerned with squatters. At this point, we'll only kick folks if they are inactive, do not atttack in war, or are belligerent in general. We have a couple 'project players' but in general do not favor rushed THs, though some of us are adopting the THx.5 strategy.

    Here:

WARNING: Serious geekdom to come. You maybe be fascinated. Or you might find yourself drooling all over your favorite shirt. Either way, you chose to read on. Consider yourself warned!

TL;DR - An in-depth look at how my clan's war weights match up to our opponents in recently wars. Conclusions include support for THx.5 strategies and that fielding a balanced lineup creates mismatches that can be advantageous in wars. Future work to include consideration of offensive capabilities, though determining weights is challenging.

I am one a couple data geeks in my clan that enjoys (perversely) tinkering, studying and otherwise analyzing spreadsheets of data. Over the course of the last 4 wars, we have begun increasing amounts of data. Initially, we simply recorded our war weights, as determined by standard methodology. The next war we added Hero data/levels to our spreadsheets. Soon after, we also began measuring our troop levels. Additionally, out of curiosity, I went back today and measured the weights of our opponents for the war we are just ending and the previous war.(See imgur links War 1 and War 2 for reference.

In both cases, we were outmatched according to total war weights, though a deeper dive into the data is warranted. First, some terminology would beneficial. I refer to the rate of decrease (or increase as you will) of war weights as slope. I refer to the top and bottom of the war weights as extremes. Further, I use the abbreviation THx.5 to illustrate the idea of any town hall level using a 0.5 advancement strategy. I will not review others work on TH8.5 here.

Consider War 1. The slope shown by graphing our weights versus their weights is more gradual. Additionally, their weights depict a steep jump between TH8 and TH9, and they have a higher extreme than we do. Taken from a strictly data point of view, if they had exercised a 'top down' war strategy, they should have theoretically beaten us soundly. Yet, we won. Our transition area, that is, the players right at the TH8/9 boundary are very close in weight, and was superior in getting stars.

Now consider War 2. The slopes here are very similar to those depicted in War 1. Our slope is again quite gradual, while their slope has a large step at the TH8/9 boundary. Our extremes are lower than theirs. Note also the 53 weight advantage they have. By data alone, one might predict our losing this war. Reality affirms this prediction.

So what have we learned from this? In general, a balanced line up seems to yield a more gradual slope and in effect, gives us an advantage overall in war matchmaking. More data is needed to confirm this however. In the 4 wars where I have 'balanced' our war lineup, which is to say, made as gradual a slope as possible in our lineup, we have won 3, losing only in this last war.

One other item that has jumped out at us is the mismatch created when one pursues a THx.5 strategy. Again, consider the imgurs above and note:

    • Bases where the defenses were pushed and focused but the offensive capabilities are lacking hurt us- the result is a high war weight, with poor attacking ability. Advantage is thus given to our opponents in this instance, in that the mismatch in weighting and attacking favors them.
    • Conversely, bases where defenses were not focused on, but offensive capabilities were emphasized help us, as the resultant war weights are low but the offense abilities enable advanced attack strategies. In other words, a mismatch is created that benefits us.
    • Those of us who have roughly equally focused upgrades on both defense and offense often are weighted such that we can hit just below our equal and with some degree of skill and strategy, achieve a minimum of 2 stars.

My secondary conclusion, based solely on the data, is that the THx.5 strategy, that is focusing on offensive upgrades over defense when going up a town hall level creates mismatches. Indeed, ignoring defense and emphasizing only offense/lab upgrades should create overpowered players.

Consider: someone who has nearly maxed out their town hall 8 is matched up against other maxed TH8s or sometimes newly-minted TH9s. Their attack capabilities are equal to their opponents, and are often mismatched when facing TH9s. If this same person were to upgrade their town hall to 9, and then ignore upgrading defenses, and only upgrade barracks, lab, camps and AQ, their weights would not change very much, but their offensive capabilities would increase drastically. One would expect much more favorable war match ups, and likely would be better able to grasp the nuances of the new attack strategies in a less stressful environment, as they would still be on the cusp of TH8/9 in war placement due the war weighting.

Thanks for listening/reading. I look forward to the discussion!
