Is TH8.5 Useless?

Sacrificing the base outside of war. It's easier to loot a th.5 base. I get looted all the time. Not a big deal, farming makes up for it, but it's still a sacrifice. Some might call it a heroic sacrifice. But I just call it a sacrifice.

If you think the th.5 bases always get 3 starred on their first try, you're wrong, again. Just like that time you incorrectly said th.5s aren't a viable strategy. Wrong. And the time you said it puts the clan at a disadvantage. Wrong.



WHOA?! So it's okay for a big bully th9 to clean up a th8? But what about the jocks kicking sand in the nerds face thing? Isn't that cowardice, by your definition? You aren't being consistent in your arguments.

I'm just gonna agree to disagree here. However, i will leave you with this thought. My clan has faced several clans that have .5 bases. They always lose. Always. Bottom line.

I have to say i think .5 is completely useless. I just started th9 12days ago from a completely maxed th8 base. During last wars, when i was still a th8, i faced several th8.5 and i didnt have any problem at all 3 starring them as i didnt have either any problem to 3 star any th8. I even asked my clan if i could attack the th8.5 as they give nicer win bonus. Also since i started th9 and built the xbows i have been matched against th9 with xbows, and i havent had any problems at all to get 3 stars, using attacks like gowipe or goho. With lvl2 golems and lvl4 hogs and a lvl3 arch queen. I havent even upgraded laboratory to lvl7 yet and i havent had any problems to 3 star at all. Xbows dont make such a big difference in my opinion, as i have been attacking th9 with xbows since i was strong enough at th8. They take very little health and in the case of golems for example, they are quite useless. In my opinion a th8.5 just perjudicates your own clanmates as it can be easily 3 starred by a th9 or 8.

Well you're a much better attacker than I've seen in any war for months. I've never, ever seen a TH8.5 3 starred by a TH8. I've seen plenty of TH9 fail to 3* TH8.5s. And apparently you 3* every time against TH9 targets with TH8 troop levels - again I see this so rarely. I mean a few of our guys do when the enemy has very bad layouts or is very rushed, but in any sensible war... nope.

Your argument is also self-contradictory. You say xbows are so weak they don't make much difference when you are attacking them. Yet you also say it's essential you build them (despite their huge weighting score) for defence otherwise you will be too weak and easy 3* fodder. So which is it - are xbows hugely important to defence, or not?

First th8.5 almost doesnt have any major difference with th8 except queen mainly, which is normally low lvl and doesnt change much an attack if you use a good strategy. So if you can 3 star maxed th8 bases then you should be capable of 3 starring 8.5. I usually didnt find any bigger complication than one that you can find on a th8 maxed. And i can assure you ive 3 starred a few of them. Second xbows dont give much more defense power. When i was a th8 i usually attacked tough th9 with xbows and usually i got 2 stars. What i mean is xbows shoot very quickly but they dont deal such a big amount of damage per second. Against small troops like goblins or archers it is usefull but against a pekka, a golem, a giant, hogs or the king and queen not much, which are the troops we mainly use in wars.

And also since i started th9 ive only been in a war and i got 6 stars. Im number 4 in my clan and i was able to 3 star my equal, which was a th9 with xbows, lvl10 canons, lvl10 arch towers, lvl6 wiz towers, etc with a jellyfish type base. And i also 3 starred number 5 which was a th8.5. We won the war 28 to 15 in a 10vs10 war ,where only their number 1 and 3 where 2 starred, the rest where 3 starred. We are 5 th9 in my clan and 4 of us just reached th9 in this last month, so it isnt that difficult.

The last 6 wars my mirror has had all their th9 defences including xbows and I've really struggled defending- luckily I've held my ownbeing a decent attacker.

Our clan has 5 8.5s in our current war yet we are all mirrored with mid-late th9s and our poor th8 is up against a th9 with xbows.

Wars are really unbalanced I don't think it really matters what route you take

Even a level 1 AQ does more damage than any gun in the base, and is ignored by hogs. That with the 4th giant bomb rules out predominantly hog raids. Assuming the AQ is centred TH8 isn't going to get a kill squad in deep enough to kill her. If she isn't centred, then the problem is base design, not the 8.5 upgrades.
Drags don't work even at max TH8, unless the target has an really bad design.
Which basically leaves gowipe. This works well against max TH8, but our 8.5s build the new walls usually. That plus the AQ, the 4th bomb, and sometimes upgrading the 3 existing teslas makes 3* by TH8 a really tough ask, and usually limits attacks from low TH9 to 2*

Second xbows dont give much more defense power. When i was a th8 i usually attacked tough th9 with xbows and usually i got 2 stars.

I think the difference here is context. All these upgrade ideas only make sense if they are appropriate to the larger picture of your war. For us the TH8/9 boundary is just below half way down our list - so attacking there is only about 3* - it's 3* or fail; there is no other result. Low TH9s who can't 3* their opposite, or thereabouts are a deadweight for us.
If this is all happening near the top of your list, then the expectations are different.
Or if it's right at the bottom (as in Fully's post above) of a clan with a whole load of TH9s and TH10s then it's not surprising if any 8.5s match against 9s - there will be a lot of potential matches out there with a TH9+ recruitment policy
