Th7s lighting one AD but that is the only useful level they are used at.

Lightning spells are now only useful for destroying air defences, wizard towers or mortars. If you have a preference to destroy these things without using troops, I suggest upgrading the spell. If you have no interest in taking down the enemy's defences (or deploying heal and rage spells strategically) before you start your raid, I suggest not upgrading them until you have maxed everything else.

Since I raid with ground troops, I've always used Lightning to zap defenses. With the defense building increased HP, I can't take out as many defenses as I used to. But it's always handy on Mortars or low level Wizard Towers.

Used as they're supposed to be used, they're still pretty handy. They do deserve a buff, though.

Lightning Spell level 5 can be a worthwhile upgrade at townhall 8. You can't take out Level 6 AD with 3 level 4 lightning spells. So if you wanna do a dragon attack against a TH8 in a war, this can be a pretty critical to your success. Townhall 8 seems to be a difficult war level. Until you got max upgrades on Pekka and Golem, gowipe isn't reliable enough, Dragon is your most reliable 2 star, but it doesn't 3 star anymore... Your best bet at 3 stars is hog rush once you hit LVL4 hogs, but even that fall flat quite often as many players specifically design their bases to be anti-hog at TH8 onwards. But I digress, if you upgrade your lightning spells to level 5, you can eliminate a level 6 AD, then focus your level 3 dragons to take out the remaining 2 ADs (Hopefully 1 or both is less than level 6), and still 3 star a TH8 with dragons.

Good point about taking down the AD. I didn't even think about that but I think I can still take down a max AD with lvl 4 spells.

It is very nice to have when you farm and you see those lvl 6 DE drills in the middle that are fully loaded. And for TH 8 you can now take out an AD with 2 lightning and an earthquake. This means you can now also take a rage spell with you on a dragon only attack.
