I have some gem saved from various achievements and clearing obstacles and I want to spend it on getting my spell facotory to level 4... How much gem it would set me back? And is it a smart thing to do or just wait it out (5days)?

If ur clan isn't going to war in the next 5 days, I would say wait it out. 5 days isn't that long.
First thing to do with those gems is to buy builders, But if you already got 5 builders, Its safe to say that you can spend it anywhere else. Anyway i dont recommend doing it since its still 5 days, meaning you got to spend a lot of gems just to finish it in an instant. I recommend you to just wait for it.

The most recommended priority use of gems is builders and then boosting. They are the most efficient and aids your gameplay the most.
Gemming a lvl3 spell factory to lvl4 will cost 760 gems. You're better off opting out for 3 wars and using that amount of gems on boosting your barracks- that's 19 boost sessions, or 76-114 million gold and elixir. It's your choice.
