Honestly I would care if I could do that to dark drills but I can't upgrade them lol, both level 3 already

Yes, this will work. I finished a drill upgrade and reboosted for one gem. Pretty sure starting an upgrade cancels the boost.

I expect it will work temporarily but they will probably do a maintenance break in approx 20 hours that will remove the boosting for everyone. It would be interesting to try though...

Not correct. You are boosting for one week, even if you start it today. The maintenance will remove the ability to boost, but won't stop ongoing boosts.
