The major reason you aren't consistently seeing dark spells is because people are still upgrading their labs. They can't make the spells while they are upgrading.
Not only does it take take (if you don't gem the time) to get access to them, but as with most things in the game lvl1 isn't particularly powerful, and it takes time to have your lab open, have the resources, and choose to start the dark spell upgrading...then wait for it to upgrade...before you get the higher levels.
Haste is the only one I haven't seen used successfully first hand yet. The area is pretty small, it doesn't increase damage, most people don't have it, and almost nobody has it leveled up.
