If you have lollipop, then you have a ton of choices with no root and free.

You can use Shou, which allows for streaming and recording. Lollipop screen recorder is another app that records in HD.

For editing you can use an app called video editor, or use YouTube's editing tools. Hope that helps!

If you don't have lollipop, then it can't be done without rooting.

To check whether you have lollipop, go into settings => about phone, and look for teh Android version. If that is 5.0 or above, then you have lollipop.

Using an app to record has been, in my experience, problematic. I'm going to go with an HDMI capture device hooked to a PC (there's one that's about $160-170 that supports up to 1080p at 60fps). As long as your gaming device has an HDMI output (or can be made to have one with an MHL adapter) you can record video directly off your device without having hardware issues.

I use MOBIGEN, it leaves a watermark on the videos but records pretty well, the only thing I haven't figured out yet is how to record game sound instead of microphone sound, I guess you can't...
