Most people won't attack you in farming with air. As suggested, pray. Keeping your TH out might or might not help. Power in prayer.
What league are you in? I was in gold 2 a few weeks ago and I still am. I'm th8 also by the way. A few weeks ago I upgraded all my air defenses to level 6 at the same time pretty much. I wasn't attacked with air troops at all for some reason. I got attacked once with 4 dragons and a few arch which the person dropped all his troops on the th. it was such a bad attack that I don't even call it a air attack. I didn't even get balloonianed. Keep your th in the corner with NO traps. You should be fine. I wouldn't go near 2 mill of gold and/or elixir though because that will make a bigger target for th9's. I think the reason you don't see much air attacks unless trophy pushing or able to boost barracks or gem troops up is because of training time. Air attacks are pretty inefiencient for farming in my opinion.
Get your air d/ sweeper up as fast as you can and spend your loot. Any th9 with max loons and level 5 minions with a couple spells can 3 star any th8, doesn't matter the air d level. That is all i did as a th9 in gold. Easiest loot out there.

Well I had all 3 air defenses upgrading and I got 3 starred with no effort by dragons because there was nothing to fight them.
just get them done now, you will be happy once they are done.

And they took 300K of each resource and 1800 DE, and my TH is outside and exposed and trap free,

Yeah, anyone with drags in their camps that comes across a loaded base with ad down is gonna smack it down, no question. Only immense stupidity will save you at that point, haha

Try hanging around 2000 trophies until they are finished upgrading. People are more likely to snipe you at that trophy level and you can still farm hard at th8. If you go below 2000 the snipe is much less likely leaving you vulnerable.
