After you have 5 builders, what is the next BEST thing to spend your gems on? I was thinking of filling my gold storages or DE. Is that sensible? Barracks-boosting isn't all that expensive, let alone 1-gem collectors boost events. I'm a near maxed TH9 btw, thanks!

Yup... I did the noob thing of buying stuff early on. Total waste of massive amount of gems.. Only boost barracks and heroes.. I wouldn't even boost spells. If you farm in the right way there is no need. You can easily raid enough for any upgrade right up to max xbows in a few days.
Just boost when you need loot. If you fill your storages and leave them then it will just be stolen
Those are the priorities in terms of using gems when I get them:
- Boosting
- Gemming build time for heroes & queen especially
- Gemming lab time
- Gemming builder time other buildings
- Buying resources
But I've never got beyond 1st & 2nd and won't go beyond that

Before boosting now it's more on heroes if the score in war is close.
But I don't buy gems since my 5th builder, these are gems I earned on achievements rewards.

Boosting my barracks and speed up upgrades of my heroes!
I've never really boosted as the 2 hour total commitment doesn't fit my playing style.
So, as a result I'm sitting on a lot of gems as the result of religious cleaning of my base.
2 hours boost will bring me a bit ahead on the game (ahead of who?), but I'll get there eventually anyway, so I have no idea what to do with my gems.
Boosts are obviously the activity that will give the best return.
