My daughter Peachie and I spent the last week volunteering at Firewheel Twilight Camp. She was a program aide and I was a unit leader for 12 Junior Girl Scouts (ages 9-10). We both had a blast!
My older daughter caught an armadillo, which we kept for about an hour in a large plastic crate to show our 250 campers. We let him go, and saw him again an hour later back out snurfling in the grass looking for worms for dinner.
The next night Peachie caught him. While I was taking her picture with him, he peed on me! Ha ha I guess he got his revenge
My girls were all bug and creature obsessed, so we created a U10 zoo for the campers to come see each night. We caught many kinds of creatures, treated them kindly, and released them a couple of hours later back where we found them.
We also found three rat snake (a nonvenomous nonaggressive beneficial snake) skin sheds, which we were able to share with the 250+ campers in all the units. Many had never seen or touched a snake skin before.
We had a great time all week with the girls, but camp week is always tiring. We got home last night at 2am, and have been lounging on the couch farming, having a chill relaxing day after all the camp craziness.
Now I need to get off the forum and unpack camp stuff from my car.![]()
I need to wash and repair all my bug nets, wash my 12 bug jugs, unpack my pickle barrel with all the camp stuff in it, repack the PB for next year, and stow it all back in the attic. I also need to buy more bug jugs. 12 bug jugs was not enough to share with 250 girls, and still have enough to keep my campers happy - especially when many had creatures in them that were in the U10 zoo. I hear bug jugs are on sale at Dollar General this week.![]()
