what do you love most about this game? I love attacking. Lots of my attacks I get for free. But when I have free time gems allow me to attack many times in a row. That is all i use gems on. FUN FACTOR. to me upgrading buildings is not fun, so I wait for them. Upgrading troops is not fun, so I wait. Its easy to wait. They upgrade while I sleep. They upgrade while I'm at work. You don't gem because you like the challenge....ok the challenge of waiting around for your troops so you can attack....nice challenge!

I will certainly agree with PedroLee. You absolutely don't need gems. I myself spent maybe $10 at max one time to add on some gems for a builders hut. Otherwise, even at town hall 9 (which I am currently at), you can farm up to 300,000 or even more of each resource IF you are patient at searching, and smart during attack.
Giving you this advice as a 10 month old player who is a th 9 and fairly maxed out in terms of th 8.

You don't have to gem. But when you get to TH8+ you my go fluffy-fluff crazy upgrading everything. I'm upgrading skull walls and it is quite the task. Can't wait to upgrade the TH9 walls.

you should buy a handful of gems at the beginning, as the builders is a long time investment, I'm not recommending you to fill storages anyway.
Hhi ya. I ve not spent a single cent so far and m maxing out my defenses at th9. Just hvnt max my ad n tesla. Currently doing lvl 9 walls. As well, i raid wth only barbs, archers, globins n wall breakers frm start till now, no giants, healers p, dragon.,,etc needed. so all my elixir goes into maxing out troops n spells, even if i dont use them.
so, yea, you can go pretty far without gems in this game.
started playing Sept 2012, I play around 8 to 14 hours a day from January to May, you need to log heavy hours if you want to avoid purchasing gems

today on the nature channel: DE zappers.
these common creatures are found from trophy ranges 800-1500. They are a cowardly bunch, and often don't even attack your usually superior base; preferring to simply lightning your DE. Often, this does not pay off, as the attackers usually become the attacked. And are killed. This is why, above 1500 trophies, you will find few zappers. Thank you.
