Have recently updated to iPhone 5. Transferred clash of clans across but it's started me from the beginning? Anyone know how to sort this? Thanks

I'm not an expert but I think you should get your account linked to gamecenter at the old device and then log in with the same gamecenter account at the new device.

yes, your gamecenter is kind of like your memory card for all devices. if you play games without a gamecenter and break your device, all data is lost because your information/gameplay was never saved or recorded on an account.
