Honestly, Clash of Clans seems kind of isolated in its outreach to other games, and not just to its sister games (Boom Beach and Hay Day). It lacks just about ANY kind of reference to famous games, such as (and I'm just naming a random few) Mario, Terraria, Assassin's Creed, or, heck, even Tetris(?) would work!
The simple solution is to add them. It doesn't matter how, just add them. They can be aesthetic or functional. If a certain time is needed, April Fools Day and Halloween are recommended times.
Here are just a few I thought up.
1. April Fools Day (aesthetic):
Turn Wallbreakers into Creepers (reference to Minecraft)
2. Halloween (aesthetic/functional?):
Jumpscares from various horror games (Five Nights at Freddy's, Amnesia, Slender, etc.) At random times when the player is in his/her own base (never during attacks), a jumpscare can occur to scare the ♥♥♥♥ out of the player.
3. (My personal "big one") New Troop (functional):
Name: Spy
300px-Spytaunt2.PNG
Reference to: Team Fortress 2
Description: "Disguised as a simple villager, the Spy can walk undetected through the base, using his 'Electro-Sapper' thingamabob to disable and destroy the mechanical defenses without tripping traps! But watch out for suspicious Archer Towers and all-seeing Wizard Towers!"
Attack Type: Sapping
DPS: 200, 250, 300 (high because the sapping happens rapidly)
Speed: 25
Health: 120, 160, 200
Max Level: 3
Training Cost: 100, 150, 200 Dark Elixir
Training Time: 10 Minutes
Troop Space: 4
Preferred Targets: Mechanical Defenses (Cannons, Mortars, Air Defenses, etc.)
Important Notes:
a: The Spy does not start the timer and scramble the villagers if he is placed first. Once a different troop other than Spies are deployed, the clock begins.
b: Archer Towers have a chance to target the Spy, but especially attack if he saps a building too close to the Archer Tower (about a 3 tile gap between the closest edges). Wizard Towers will instantly target the Spy no matter what. If the Spy is spotted (targeted by a tower), everything attacks it.
c: He does not attack Archer Towers or Wizard Towers, but if the Clan Castle somehow triggers, from however much comes out, he targets the strongest ground troop and back-stabs it for an instant kill. However, once he attacks, he is instantly spotted.
d: The Spy can hop over walls while disguised, but loses the ability once he is spotted.
Trivia:
a: When deploying the Spy, he will say "Gentlemen," before cloaking himself in smoke and turning into a villager.
b: At level 1, the Spy's color will look like that of a Blu Spy in Team Fortress 2. At level 2, he changes to a Red Spy. At level three, he gains the Ghastly Gibus hat from Team Fortress 2 (though it is somewhat hard to see).

If you have an idea for a reference, post it here! Tell whether it is aesthetic or functional, and if it is functional, what it does! Note: BE SERIOUS.
