In addition to the stat increase that others have mentioned, you should also consider the upgrade cost and time of each.

Cost wise, archers has a higher upfront cost at 7.5 million elixir. Not only will you need to get the fourth elixir storage up, you’ll need to farm enough to fill the new storage halfway, in addition to what else you might’ve already spent on other things (lab, de drills, camps). Giants and barbs are 6 mil and 4.5 mil, which gives you a bit more leeway in terms of what else you might upgrade first.

Time wise, archer takes 14 days to complete, while barbs/giants both take 10 days. You’ll be able to benefit from the new troops sooner, and be able to farm better sooner.

I would definitely go with archers because they are far more useful than giants which are just meatshields.

Depends on your ratio of archers:giants
My army is 76:12 = 76:60. So if thats like your ratio do the higher ofc. However giants for me. I slacked off them for 2nd to last (balloons last) and i regret it. They have amazsing increases

It's called obstacles, and the rate is much higher than 1 gem per day.

    Definitely Archers for me

These are my few favourite farming army composition
    1) Barb/Arch/WB combo
    2) Barb/Arch/WB/Minion combo
    3) 40/60/40/8/10 Combo
    4) 30/60/30/12/10 Combo

And if you notice, majority of the troops in each composition are archers.

And since the wb update, many people are creating more compartments in their base, in which range troops like archers are more important.

well, i think its easy to say archers first, but in practice (see my earlier post) its easier to do giants first...

Clan wars are great, it ranks the best, and puts their bases to the test.
You have two chances to attack, and put some stars up on the map.
No empty castles, no used up traps, infernos full, xbows are strapped.
You will be JUDGED, when replay reveals, what army was used and player skills.

I actually found that barbs where the most effective troop to upgrade first. With not having to build the fourth elixer storage right away, and still having enough elixer to build my second drill. That did it for me. Upgrading archers right now (second l6 troop). But now wishing I had upgraded giants

I did Giants 1st so that i could upgrade my new elixir storage to max and save for archers.

worked out well as i always use giants in my attack.
