How are the most heroic attacks/defences determined in clan wars?

The title does enough to ask the question. It's just something I've been wondering about because it seems that the attacks chosen are rarely the best. A good example is in the war I'm in now, our most heroic attack is our #20, th8, attacking their #20, also a th8, and with their th outside. Although they 3 starred it is far from being the first, or highest 3 star attack. Meanwhile I'm a th7, #23, who was forced to attack their #18, th8, who had a strong base. I attacked with only level 1 dragons and managed to get 2 stars and 92%, undoubtedly more impressive than the current most heroic attack. How is this all decided?

Last war I had a 0 star attack vs my base (ranked #1) by their #1 and we had no Heroic Defense listed. That makes no sense.

Although Heroic Attack seems to typically be when a lower ranked base 3 stars a higher ranked base.

It depends on the stars you get, your number in war map and your opponent. The game recognizes 3* is better than 2*. Its not related with your troops level.

No one exactly knows how it works. But mostly if you hit above recommended target you will get most heroic attack

Also, for me the Recommended Target is always so low. For example, if i'm number 4 to 8 why does it recommend me 24 to 26 in the oppositions clan? Maybe the game knows how much I suck.

But seriously, if it's recommending the bottom opponents to the top players then who are the bottom one's being recommended? Perhaps they're just recommended to "sit this war out"

Depends on how far above yoru recommended you attack and the inverse for defense

As stated nobody knows the exact answer. If you 2 or 3 star above yourself you have a good chance, especially if you attack a TH level higher than yours.

Most Heroic Defense hasn't worked since the update. I could be wrong here, but I haven't seen any since, even with our 19 defending against their 7.

As for recommended, it's based on who you should be able to get an "easy" 2 star. It is usually 1-5 below your counter. It ends up being very low after people start attacking. Recommended always chooses a base that has 0 stars first. Not sure if it was fixed, but they never updated the recommended to have it to where offense could match up against the 4th mortar and the skele traps. In October when they added those things recommendeds dropped slightly lower.
