Whenever someone want to be a mod this is what I think about, I don't know about you, but I could never do this.. No snarky cat pics? No more calling out some idiot who thinks they want to start a flame war? Give up saying " this may be the dumbest idea i ever read? Stop derailing threads with cat related stuff? Could you see me doing this? I wouldn't last a day......lol

I think the OP should be applauded for his good thought. And he is correct in his observation that there is work there that is not getting done. (Its why more than a few of us have put up that we are willing to consider taking on the task). But I think also that if they ever take someone it has to be a person that has been here a long time with a lot of interaction. Despite how good the OPs observations are so far, there is no way that after just 50 posts he can have the total picture a moderator has to deal with.
I have considered the idea myself. When there was an open audition/application about a year ago I contemplated applying for it, but then I realized what it would mean. Yes, I can be objective and have moderated many forums and gaming groups in the past, but with that responsibility means you can no longer have a true personal opinion.

Notice with Zach, how often did you ever see him posting and commenting in threads when he was a moderator? Rarely and only in response as a moderator.

Now that he's no longer a moderator, he's in almost every thread, discussing with freedom.

You lose your individualism as a moderator, you are no longer just a forumer with an opinion - you become a person of power that represents a certain criteria. Right or wrong, agree or disagree, your role is crystal clear and you must uphold that role whenever you are online.

If I were ever offered a position, I probably wouldn't turn it down but I don't think I'd actively seek it out....

I try to keep some prospective on things (note the word 'try') and remember that I'm only seeing a short instance of a person in a set situation. As I said, smart people can come up with dumb ideas, and dumb people can come up with smart ideas. So I give then a few chances to show something different. Also empathizing with them and realizing they could be in the same shoes as you are, or were, in some way helps defuse the usual snap insult judgements one can easily make; all because they don't know the person, and see the 'stupid person' as a 'them', rather than an 'us'.

I'm also quick to point out the difference between ignorance and idiocy. Newbies will be ignorant coming here, and will very likely make the same mistakes most of us have made, due to how humans think in general, if they don't research what has been done already. I was a newbie once, I have a few (undeleted) ruled out idea thread, and would be to my disadvantage to forget how I've changed and leaned, since I actually need that experience to help talk to newbies in a way that isn't off putting.

I'm an adult, and I'm still learning things about behavior, including my own. I do come off as elitist at times now because, well.. I have more or less earned it. I have quite a bit of working knowledge on what has been done here, along with more than a few esoteric factoids and trivial bits of information that only one really gets from experience. And I'm not the only one. Others can and may have done the same, and is really easy to act elitist when you don't think about it.

Which.. one can do a lot of stupid things if they don't put much thought into it, regardless of thier 'intelligence'.

It seems like a catch-22. A good Mod/Leader/Manager doesn't actively look for and want that position, especially not for personal gain; but the ones that do want it, often want it for personal gain and bragging rights, and are not as able to fulfil the position they are hunting.
(and this is why I will kick any new member asking for 'co', and how I got co, and then leader , without asking or really wanting it)

As someone who has his share of idiotic ideas i would welcome you letting me know when i'm being an idiot. I view it as constructive criticism.

Multiple forum accounts? well, since that is strictly against the rules and leads to an immediate ban, I agree, you don't qualify to be a mod

You're recent spree of playing backseat-forum-police leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
Commenting sarcastically on posts meant for actual discussion, going around threads and telling people off for 'bumping' (which ironically bumps the thread more - and I can't even find a rule stopping people from posting on old threads).

Multiple forum accounts was clearly not used for nefarious purposes, if they ever existed - stop judging people - especially their ability to moderate.
