    under rated?

I think they are under rated troop. they have a good amount of defense and hit points. they do splash damage sort of and they are fast and can take out that builder hut in the corner that every low level town hall has. But they cost a lot of dark elixir. I don't have enough to even upgrade my hogs witch is priory one on my list. they are destroyed by spring traps. and then they take so long to attack. many people would choose wiz over them for half of the training spaces but also wiz wait and sometimes don't attack when facing clan castle troops. Over all they can be good but you need the right army and that is another great mystery of clash of clans.
I think they need to make the val have another revision like making them cost less or taking one half damage from a defense. and they need to take up less spaces than 8. Over all they need some revisions but can be an "ok" troop

Cost needs to go down and rate of fire needs to go up. Even then I wouldnt use them because the training time is too long though. Hogs are quick to train, almost as quick as minions in terms of time/housing space.
    Per housing space its
    Minion-22.5
    Hogs-24
    Valks-60

To your point on taking up less than 8 space. 8 spaces mean only 1 valk gets sent flying from a spring trap

To those who don't think valks can be an effective farming troop, I disagree.

I've got a defenseless TH9 account. That means that gold is meaningless to me, for the most part. It's main use is hitting the next button, and upgrading elixir storages/collectors. My biggest gold costs are upgrading town hall and clan castle. Even DE is somewhat meaningless to me. I'm trying to carefully track the increase in my war value, so I can't just upgrade my king/queen constantly.

That means that the only resource I care about is elixir. Heck, my EE is more than 50% higher than my GG, because I leave gold behind when it's convenient to do so.

Saving up 6M elixir for a troop upgrade can be difficult, since there's a 95% chance that I'll be 3-starred when I log off. So I have to session raid. And I have to raid cheap. At first, I was using GiBarch. But since late TH8, I've been using VaGiBarch. I throw in anywhere from 2 to 6 valks, replacing the giants in my GiBarch comp. I try to have at least 1 giant, if for no other reason than to tank WB's when the barbs and valks won't go to the right spot.

Anyway, since DE was meaningless, I had no problem stacking both dark barracks with valks while I cooked my GiBarch army. And when I raided, the only number I looked at was the available elixir. I recently farmed 3M elixir (net) in 2 hours, and managed to net an additional 4k DE or so, despite having both dark barracks boosted and stacked with valks the entire 2 hours.

So yeah, they're effective at farming.
Dragons: You either love them or hate them. Well, or maybe both... Or maybe you don't care...
Regardless of how you feel about dragons, please see this suggestion for Rebalancing Town Hall 7, which is primarily focused around rebalancing dragons.

I find them that bit too squishy against maxed bases. They just seem to evaporate really quickly when reaching the core.

    Then again, so do pekkas.

Not convinced. The splash on buildings was a good idea, but the extra walking (as already mentioned by some) coupled with movement speed means they're always going to be that little too far ahead to stay safe.

I am thinking of giving them some more goes for when kingless, as they are same speed as Queen.

    TH10s with 50+ hero levels, 9.5s with 40+, silent noobs<> needs you!

I can't remember the last time I attacked in war without valks. I use 2 pekkas and 4 valks in my GoWiPe strat. Great for taking out the cc too.

the ginger ninjas have been getting a lot of face time lately on youtube, check out onehive and hulkfiles

they move fast, pretty beefy, and do splash damage. unleash a pack of them in a tightly packed core, drop a heal and rage and watch them turn that core to ruble in just a few swipes. pure awesomeness when used right
