Can you set a war base as your active base, even if you haven't placed all your buildings then?

As a young, confident Royal Giant I am deeply offended that you assumed by gender to be male. I am in fact a multicultural royal "organism'.

No, and no point. Even if it's not in your war base, it still adds to weight

    Troop upgrades

Am I understanding correctly that the idea is to upgrade ONLY the troops stated in the OP?

    Barbs
    Archers
    Loons
    Hogs
    Golems

The idea is to only upgrade troops you will need for loot and for war.

Barbs and archers are all you need for looting purposes.

Loons, hogs, golems, wizards, wall breakers, and eventually lava hounds are the troops I plan to use in war. I decided to skip dragons because once I hit th9 I think lava hounds and loons will be more effective than a bunch of dumb dragons. By skipping dragon upgrades it means I have one less troop type increasing my war weight.

Interesting thread, I'm glad I came across it. I'm in the process of building a similar war-focused mini that has no mortars and no cannons (except the first one). It will be interesting to compare the defensive war weights around th8 or 9. I'd prefer to have the 4 wiz towers and all ATs rather than a mix with mortars and cannons.

I also think this exercise will let me quantify how much the 4 mortars and cannons are worth and see where adding xbows or infernos would put me, depending on where that lines up it could be stellar.

    Air Sweepers

Apologies if this has already been covered, I admit I skimmed the thread.

My understanding is Air Sweepers are incredibly low war weight and they can be quite an annoyance - is there a reason you have left them out. I would highly consider adding them into your plan. Especially at TH9 and TH10 with 2 sweepers they can be quite an annoyance for attackers.

I forget if air sweepers were introduced after the OP started this thread, but air sweepers could be worth their weight. At this point it's probably a personal choice. I think I will hold off on building air sweepers until I get all the th9 defensive additions in place. I want to see how well the base holds up without them before making the irreversible decision to build them.

Another area I am kind of undecided about is if I should upgrade any regular barracks to level 10. That would unlock pekkas and add to my offensive weight. Offensive weight seems to be an area of mostly speculation not based on a lot of actual data. It's also not clear if the barracks itself will also contribute to the war weight. Since I am planning on using either GoHo or later the LavaLoon strategy, I don't think I will need pekkas. So my current thinking is I should NOT upgrade regular barracks to 10, based on pekka weight, and possibly barracks weight.

My Offensive Upgrades "To Do" List update, before I can upgrade to th9:
    CC to 4 [done]
    lab to 6 [done]
unlock golems (dark barracks to lvl 4) [3 days left]
    dark spell factory to 2
    archer to lvl 5 [done]
    loons to 5 [done]
    wiz to 5 [done]
    heal to 5 [done]
hogs to 4 [currently upgrading] [10 days left]
    lightning to 5 [4 days]
    rage to 5 [7 days]
barbs to lvl 5 [5 days]
wall breakers to lvl 5 [5 days]
golems to level 2 [10 days]

Based on my To Do list I have about a month until I will be ready to upgrade to th9. Once the golem upgrade begins I will also start the TH upgrade to 9. My defenses should easily be maxed for th8 by the time my lab can get through the troop upgrades, and the barbarian king should be around level 10 by then too. Once defenses are maxed I will work on getting all the walls to level 7, mostly just to do something productive while I wait.

My position on the war map is at the bottom of the th8s and above the th7s. Last war my defensive war weight was 41k (see link at bottom of my post to figure out war weight). My base has been giving up only 2 stars to people around the same rank, usually someone a little higher has to come down to finish the base off for the 3rd star. And that's the goal of the entire concept.

On offense I have been able to 3 star any th7, and the lower th8s, with level 2 hogs. I literally just got level 3 hogs and haven't had a chance to use them in war yet. Once my hog upgrade to level 4 finishes I am confident I will be able to tackle most th8s.

I am very pleased with the effectiveness of this strategy, even at TH8 the plan is already paying off for both the account and for the clan. ToddYoung213 showed great insight in his OP.

I will post another progress report when it seems appropriate.

No. All buildings must be placed in order to save as an active base. Only if you have added building to your regular base after saving the base and chose not to update your war base can it even happen. But the war weight is based on what you have available, not what you have on your actual base. So leaving things off of your war base that you already own, won't do you any good.

The number of attacks it takes and who is doing it makes the difference.
    This.

Also with fewer buildings you have more walls to cover things and you offer a completely unique set of problems to your opponent... especially at the lower levels. The stuff you can do with spacing on a skewed th8 base will baffle that th6-7 Giant healer attack.
