Adding these features would make COC even more strategical and fun! COC is the best of its kind, why not make it better? Allowing heroes to have different equipment would allow for more strategical strategies. Think about out it, a hero that you designed to be effective at defending but with the sacrifice of weaker offense isn't a strategy move? Or maybe you designed a hero that's effective at attacking with the sacrifice of weaker defense. Or maybe you designed a well balanced hero with the variety of different armor and weapons you could choose. You can just switch it up with various equipment. These features would make heroes more interesting, helpful, unique and fun. BUT! These features should be well thought about and well balanced. Im sure Supercell could handle that.
Equipment
There should be 2 main equipment pieces. The armor & the weapon. These equipment could mainly be obtained from single player missions. For example, there may be a mission that has a reward for an archer queen bow with its own unique stats; Or, these equipment can be obtained from when you kill a hero (Defense & Attack). You get a chance at an equipment drop. There should also be common, uncommon, rare, epic and legendary equipment. The higher the lvl and the stronger equipment of the hero you kill , the better chances you will get a drop and the better chances it will be a legendary, epic, rare or an uncommon type. Or maybe there can even be some exclusive equipment from the store that would cost resources.

This would be the original Barbarian King's equipment, just to get an idea. You can mix & match between various armor and weapons.

and so on and so on. Just make a wide variety of different armor and weapons. These are just examples! Keep it well balanced and fun.
Notes
*Every time you lvl your hero you would still get the same bonus damage & health, and increased regen time.
*The name of the hero should go by the armor so if you have the templar king's armor equipped but a gladiator sword then your king's name is still templar king.
*Of course, each armor & weapon would be exclusive to the designated hero.
