I think they said that this change was not decided by Supercell and that they are required to drop support for the old version. I think it may be something related to the gamecenter account and you cant login with an old version.

Giving support for so many different ios versions can be a tough thing to handle for their support team, and developing using software that more and more shift towards the new generation of I-devices for the old ones can be frustrating.

I think the main reason is not a coming update, although it might be the case. It's more likely that it has to do with supercell not wanting to develop their games for outdated I-devices/IOS-versions
