I have done a ton of reading on dragon attacks but mine are hit or miss. I have had NO luck with lightning based attacks. This is from earlier today and I'm not sure what went wrong. Spell placement? I REALLY want to get better.

The first thing I almost immediately noticed was that you dropped your hogs too late. You want to do that at the beginning of your attack, first thing. The CC seemed far enough away.
The BK shouldn't be randomly dropped at the middle of the attack. Best thing to do is to drop it at the very beginning to clean up outer buildings.
Second, you brought 2 rage, 1 heal. Rage and heal spells are normally used to dissect tougher bases that have perfectly triangulated air defenses. This, however is different. Since there was that exposed AD, you should have used the hogs, and then dropped 3 lightning over the center of the bottom left AD, come in from the top right so you would have less to deal with.
I don't know how often you face bases like those, but when you see one exposed air defense, you can hog it, use 3 lightning spells on another, and then 10 drags or a dragloon variant from the side closest to the last AD.

I actually used 2 heal/1 rage. The hogs I brought only for the purpose of taking out the exposed AD- I usually use balloons. Once the AD's were all gone, my dragons seem to succumb mostly to air mines and teslas, so I'm not sure going in with just lightning would have worked? The dragons should have been able to take on two AD's- that's the principle of the 11 light theory, no?
Apologies, but I don't agree with a few things the poster above said.
I do agree that this most certainly was a 3-light base, either the AD at 2:00 or the AD at 8:00. I would have either gone 99 or 105 here.
You sniped the correct AD. I disagree that you drop hogs immediately. That makes little sense, as you'd want other defenses, like the WT or the AT targeting the dragons, not your hogs...that way, they can take more stuff.
And B king for cuts at the beginning is very, very optional. That's not necessarily a, "recommended" thing you should do every time. Many times, it's wise to use him to clean up, especially when trying to keep the drags in the middle or use him to keep your DPS post downing all ADs
Based on where the CC is, I likely would have come in from 2:00, but you could probably make either side work

so you would have lit the AD at 2:00 or 8:00, then sent either 9 balloons or 5 balloons to snipe the one on the right?
Was the failure here just due to not removing an AD? I always use rage/heal but maybe I need to go back to basics with lightning instead.

Using rage/heal vs. lightning is base specific. Here, I definitely would have gone 3-light and I'm confident you would have done really well.
Easiest way to three star that would have been to drop cc hogs on first ad. Use three lightning spells to wipe out another ad and then let the drags do the work
