I think he's being everything but useless here... I too believe that hero abilities would be overpowered in defense. I've seen videos of high-level players attacking bases with level 40 heroes. And they're already pretty hard. Let me give you an example of what would happen if your base was under attack...
The enemy has reached your town hall/most important compartment (for the sake of this lets think you're not farming).
Your heroes notice the enemy troops, and even though they know they are pekkas and golems (could be anything really), they distract them from the townhall! But then they start going down in health, the pekkas are too strong, the golem's are just too tanky... All seems lost... But never fear! Your mighty heroes activate their abilities, spawning subordinates to distract the enemy and terrifying health regen (barb King) and devasting damage (Archer queen). Yay chief, your village was saved!
Now look at this the other way around, where you're the attacker. Not really nice, is it?
Ok, maybe I did make a bit of a tragedy of something that is not, but really, this would be annoying, not interesting. This could maybe work on Town hall 7-8 situations, where the heroes aren't as strong as town hall 10 ones and maybe don't have the ability: if they did, they wouldn't pose as much as a problem! But look at level 40 heroes... They spawn 32 troops in total when activating their abilities, and also regenerate health! This would be the worst nightmare for attackers! You could maybe evade this problem by using troops that attack only defenses, such as lava hounds and balloons, but we wouldn't want to use the same attack strategy every time for everybody...
Now IF troop abilities were to be implemented in defense, they would surely have to be drastically nerfed, maybe limit the troops spawned or only heal the heroes for a very small percentage... But what would low level heroes do? Get back 400 health? Not very fair for them.
This what I think, and if you perchance did not understand what I was trying to say, I do not want hero abilities to activate in defense, even more only if the defender is online! Unfair advantage to the player that can enter the game whenever he wants against one that can't because of reasons.
