I am the Site Manager of Clashofclansbuilder.com. I recently started a discussion called "Does the game reward bad attacking?". The community on our site and I began discussing possibilities of a 4 or 5 star system that would replace the 3 star system we currently have that is heavily flawed.
The basis of the original argument was that the game doesn't necessarily reward good/bad attacking, but in rewarding neither, it actually rewards poor attacking. People who plan their attacks and use meticulous spell/troop placement often aren't found to do any better than those who just "wing it". The problem is that the current 3 star system gives up far too much for what the attacker actually does - 1 star for 50%, 1 star for the Town Hall, and then the final star for 100% annihilation. Getting 2 stars isn't difficult, even on tougher bases (Maxed TH9+). But getting 3 stars is an entirely different story. Now, I am not trying to preach my own personal complaints about the system, I'm simply offering a new take on potential replacement for the current system. Here it is:
1 Star for 50%
2 Stars for the Town Hall (3 stars in total if you get 50% and the Town Hall)
Here's the catch:
a 4th star will be awarded at 75% ONLY if the Town Hall has also been destroyed
a 5th star will be awarded for 100% annihilation
This takes away the possibility of a poor attacker being able to consistently 2-star in clan wars, and it keeps a proper balance as far as overall styles go. A player cannot just load up the dragons and go for an "easy" 2 star on a tough base on the basis of percentage destruction alone. The Town Hall is considered the "most important" part of your base, so it should be far more heavily weighted than percentages.
I also completely understand that even a 5 star system would have its flaws, but based on the argument that the current system rewards poor, unplanned, random attack styles, a 5 star system does a much better job at rewarding an attacker than a 3 star system.
So it would be possible to get a 1 star 99% still? Let's say the only building left standing is the Town Hall, would that still be a 1 star? because even thought the attacker got the 75% for the 4th potential star, he didn't include the TH in his destruction?
That's right, a 99% one star would be entirely possible, but like I mentioned, any system would be flawed. Percentages need to be weighted slightly less than the Town Hall, which is what I tried to incorporate in my suggestion.
99% one stars happen so rarely and usually only in Hog/Dragon attacks that go as bad as they possibly can. Obviously I am open to criticism regarding how a 99% one star within a system can be avoided, but I don't see how without creating an imbalance. I suppose that a 2nd star could be awarded at 90% automatically if the Town Hall HASN'T been destroyed yet, but that may also defeat the purpose of the intended change.
The objective of my proposal is to decrease the probability that a haphazard and poorly planned attack rewards the attacker with stars that can be extremely decisive in the final outcome of the war.
