"Having mastered the art of ancient lava magic, the Volcano Mage knows just how to make buildings take more damage, making it easier for his army to destroy the village!"
Summary
- The Volcano Mage is a ranged unit, capable of attacking both ground and air targets. He causes splash damage like a Wizard.
- He follows friendly units, but still attacks buildings like normal. With each shot, he makes the targeted building/unit take a certain % more damage from other friendly troops (But not other Volcano Mages.)
- The Volcano Mage will attack whatever his pack is attacking, meaning that sometimes he will attack Clan Castle troops, (for example, when he is paired with Wizards or Archers) or he will sometimes ignore them if he is with troops who have a favorite target. (Giant, Golem)
- When the Volcano Mage dies, he leaves a small rage spell in his place. At level 1, the rage spell is that of a level 1 rage spell, and so on.
What kind of strategies this unit would enable
- Drop the Volcano Mages with other units near the Barbarian King at the start of the attack. This will help other troops get rid of the Barbarian King early, making the attack easier.
- Dropping the Volcano Mage behind high-damaging but weak units, (like the Wizard or even Valkyrie) will ensure that these troops can deal much more damage before they die.
- Paired with Giants, the Volcano Mage will ensure the Giants do more damage while the Giants in turn absorb damage for the Volcano Mage. The same can be done with a Golem.
- Do not place the Volcano Mage in the line of fire, as he is fairly weak and can be killed off easily.
- Note that the Volcano Mage will not follow flying units, but since he attacks buildings to make them take more damage, flying units can still reap the benefits of this.
What kind of army compositions include this unit
- GiVoHealer (Giants + Volcano Mages + Healers + Clean up troops): This edited version of the popular army GiHealer adds two or three Volcano Mages to the combination. This will ensure that the Giants can both be healed and do more damage at the same time, leading to a much more efficient attack. Dropping some Archers behind them will take care of the clean up.
- GoHoVo (Golems + Hog Riders + Volcano Mages + Clean up troops): While the Golems tank for the hogs, the Volcano Mage can stick to the Golems to ensure they do more damage and don't die as fast, giving the Hog Riders a much easier attack. Drop clean up troops behind.
- GiWiVo (Giants + Witches + Volcano Mages): One Volcano Mage can be placed behind a group of Giants to get rid of the defenses faster, and one behind the Witches so they can do more damage between attacks as they are also very weak units.
How to redo your base to protect from this unit
- Centralized splash defenses are the best way to go, as the Volcano Mage sticks to groups and can be killed off easily by Multi-target IT's, Mortars, and Wizard Towers.
- Place a lot of holes in your base where Giant Bombs could be, as they are the single most dangerous defense against the Volcano Mage.

Trivia/FAQ
This section is for interesting facts and questions asked by commenters. If you want to give feedback, please read through this list before you post.
- The damage boost does not stack between other Volcano Mages.
- The damage boost lasts for the same time it takes the Volcano Mage to attack.
- The Volcano Mage is unlocked at Dark Barracks level 7, and the Wizard (his distant relative) is unlocked at Barracks level 7.
- If the Volcano Mage is faster than the units he is following (like the Golem or Giant) he will periodically stop moving so he can stay behind the pack somewhat.
- Similarly, if the troops the Volcano Mage is following are faster than he is, he can not speed up. This is like the Healer.
- When units have been hit by the Volcano Mage, they will be surrounded in lava.
- The damage boost only affects one building, but the rage spell when he dies acts like a normal rage spell.
