They don't do regular events. Remember, the last one was the Barbarian & Dragon event!! that was the end of January and start of February, around the time of the Superbowl, where the last ad (link in my signature) talked about barbarian and dragons raiding places. (So... many... barbarian... rush... raids)
They don't do those events lightly, since it drastically alters the game's economics and balance. They do likely try to spin it as something fun, but could have different reasons, like fixing the balance in something, or testing something.
