The situation we were facing was a renegade who trained a cheap GiBarch army in the war, and attacked opponents much higher ranked than he was supposed to for the easy one star and maximum loot. Sure he won his attacks, but he did absolutely nothing to win the war, as someone else will be forced to train an expensive army (involving golems hounds or drags) to "finish the job" for three stars. Seems like a shame everyone else still in the clan has to fight even harder so this clown can get his loot.
As to whether it could be abused, I suppose you could allow the deserter to keep 1/3 of the loot if they 1-starred, 2/3 if they 2-starred, all if they 3-starred.
