I am going to upgrade my Town Hall to 9 tonight or tomorrow. My last lab research would be taking Golems to 2. If I start the Golem upgrade with about 4-5 days left on the town hall, then immediately upgrade the lab once the town hall is complete, will the golem research keep going? If so, the research would complete right about the time the lab is done and I'd be ready for the next troop. Does that sound like a decent plan?

This is 100% false. It continues while your lab is upgrading. Test for yourself, you'll see. I know, you'll point the wiki that states otherwise. I don't care, it continues.
The research continues while lab is upgrading. When lab upgrade completes you may get some weirdness, with the research saying it still has time to go, but if you logout and back in again it should say research was completed.

I did that exactly!
I start golem 2 five days before th9 completed. Then after entering to th9 I upgrade lab.
Five days later my lab finished and golem lvl2 finished 37 mins later!
So that was the best timing for me!
It's a bug that supposedly only works if the time remaining on the research is less than the time of the lab upgrade. And as someone said, usually you have to logout,Attack etc to complete the research once labs done
Your Golems will pause from the moment you hit your Lab upgrade for 5 days till your lab finishes; then resume brewing Golems.
I recommend you delay the starting of your TH, or let the Golems finish before you start upgrade to your lab.
Why?
Because if you upgrade TH and it finishes before the lab, then you will still have to wait an additional 5 days until your lab unit is done brewing AND your Lab finishes upgrade if you do the Lab upgrade right away. Which most will recommend... on top of that you will still only get to use the lower level 1 Golems the whole while.
wouldn't it be better to wait for 2-3 days for the Lab to finish, so you can use your L2 Golems while your lab upgrades for 5 days? to me that would allow you to make better use of builder time and start 1-4 your Camps in the 2-3 days waiting for your Lab to finish Golems to L2. I think a couple days with out the new Lab wont stall your progress overall. (especially if you get your AQ, do some or all of the following in that time; 1-4 Camps and SF and CC)
