Simple, because you are both in the same league.
Then the formula needs to be changed. That's one messed up formula.
Matchmaking for pvp is based upon trophies, nothing more.
Too many lower level players defend their townhall as if there was something valuable about it. Don't.

Leading the purge in purge~a~maniacs.....everybody can't be a purger these days. Check out the recruitment thread though (Purge~a~maniacs)

You can take steps to decrease your odds of being attacked by a very large opponent, but you can't eliminate those odds.
1. Put your townhall out and do not trap it.
2. Stay in low trophies, I was in silver1 all the way until I was a mid TH9.
3. Create a funnel type base that is hard to attack and never rush your townhall levels. Max out
My advice is upgrade all troops if you love war..
