I'd collect the dark elixir for the upgrades of heroes and gem the upgrade time. Boost your collectors and barracks to.

I'd only upgrade attack - troops, heroes, spells. Maxxing the rest of the defences just leaves you nothing to do in the game except lie back and watch the clouds.

My troops are maxed, so I have nothing left to upgrade troop wise.

If you can collect enough dark elixir for heroes then gem their upgrade time. 500$ will get your heroes to lvl40. But don't use gems on resources as you will be paying a lot for little resources

Not even close. Go to the clash of clans wiki. You can gather all of the numbers, including gem costs there.

i had a quick look at just the dark elixir resources would run you over $700 for the Archer Queen. You are talking millions of dark elixir, like over 6 million dark elixir from level 10 to 40.

I would use use them to gem build times and barracks boosts, spell factory boosts and hero healing boosts.
