I'm in the process of upgrading gold to pink walls. Then of pink to purple walls, i know.. long road. My question is should i have my higher level walls on the inside of my base or on the outside?

If I may offer a suggestion. This does not have to be a long road.. Could be done in a weekend with boosting the production speed of your barracks. The gold you will get from decimating bases is unreal.

As for the question.. Inner walls protecting your resources/town hall IMO as wall bombers will have a harder time getting there.

put your better walls on the inside. work your way out.

i meant long road because i am going for skulls as well. The 75k will be easy, 200k not so much, but 500k at 225 walls is quite a climb

Stronger inner walls are more important. People will generally use a lot of wall breakers which will have no problems destroying your outer walls (upgraded or not). The key is having strong inner walls because they'll likely be out of wall breakers by then or just not have enough to fully pass through your base.

this is right... i tend to start with the inner layer always(whichever level) for the reason said above

I start with the inner walls, but also doing the cross sections is always a good idea. If one wall breaker can open two sections then put a stronger wall there.
