Add the total amount of DE it would cost then work out the cost to gem that amount of De.
3,300,000 Dark Elixir: 93,672 gems
1 week upgrade time: 1,000 gems. 30 weeks total: 30,000 gems
Total: 123,672 gems/$900
Actual amount will be more than that, since you can't gem the Dark Elixir 100% efficiently.

Every time I start a one week hero upgrade (which they all are at level 15+) it says it takes 999 gems to finish the upgrade. 999 gems times 30 levels is 29970 gems. That is just for the time. If you are talking about gemming the DE needed to start the upgrades as well it is best to use the wiki calculator.
And this is why many players that want to gem heroes only gem the time, but farm the DE with boosts.
It's a much cheaper way to achieve it.
